Discovery Place Science
As a science and technology center for every age group, Discovery Place Science encourages visitors to expand their imaginations in the exploration of interactive exhibits, activities, and experiments. Located in Uptown, Discovery Place Science includes an IMAX Dome Theatre that presents the latest discoveries and breakthroughs made by accomplished scientists. After 29 years of operation, Charlotte’s primary science center went through an extensive $31.6 million renovation in 2010 to transform into one of the most technologically advanced science centers in the world.
Charlotte Aquarium
Although Charlotte remains the largest metropolitan area in the United States without a zoo, the city offers visitors the critically acclaimed Sea Life Charlotte-Concord Aquarium located near the city of Concord. With an opening in February of 2014, the 30,000 square foot aquarium is considered one of the must visit places in greater Charlotte. The aquarium is home to several marine biology research studies, including a project to discover a healthier way to harvest shrimp from the Atlantic Ocean. Researchers at the facility have also successfully bred and raised nine different seahorse species to prevent the rare marine animal from becoming extinct.
